Abstract: This paper deals with the problem of the behaviour of a ship in restricted waters with special regard to underkeel clearance. The main factors affecting the keel clearance are squat, heaving and pitching motions, the occurrence of a heeling angle due to windpressure and ruddermovements and the rolling motion. Distinction will be made for canals, shallow water of finite width and shallow water of infinite width. It is emphasised that the efforts are mainly concentrated on the several calculation procedures which exist for squat and the difficulties involved in practical applications. Abstract: Water shipment is the enemy number 1 of full-loaded ships in rough seas. Two diagrams, showing speed related to sea state, in head seas and in beam seas, are given for seven ships, ranging from the fast cross-channel ship to the large container-ship, and for each ship information is added, not only on deck wetness, but also on pitching, accelerations, slamming and racing. The actual speed loss is compared with a estimated loss deduced either from a conventional diagram or from a formula, which might well be used at the design stage of the ship. Abstract: In Part I excessive positive buoyancy was shown to cause lateral instability of the buoyant ascent of an underwater vehicle whose excess buoyancy is forward of the centre of mass so that the motion is predominantly forward. A divergent motion in roll and yaw occurred. This Part examines ascents in which the buoyancy is further aft so that the motion is near vertical. Excessive buoyancy is shown to cause a divergent oscillation in roll, sway and yaw.
