Abstract: Water shipment is the enemy number 1 of full-loaded ships in rough seas. Two diagrams, showing speed related to sea state, in head seas and in beam seas, are given for seven ships, ranging from the fast cross-channel ship to the large container-ship, and for each ship information is added, not only on deck wetness, but also on pitching, accelerations, slamming and racing. The actual speed loss is compared with a estimated loss deduced either from a conventional diagram or from a formula, which might well be used at the design stage of the ship. Some guidance on how to prevent wetness is included.
