Abstract: Soft surface technique to predict cavitation erosion of ship propellers through model tests in cavitation tunnel was studied. Among several materials for the soft surface, the stencil ink was chosen in view of the proposal of the Cavitation Committee of ITTC and applied to geosim model propellers of a container ship through the comparative cavitation tests in two cavitation tunnels. As a result, the stencil ink was found to work pretty well, if the standard procedure to prepare the soft surface is established. Abstract: In this note a finite element method for the calculation of the three-dimensional added mass of a vibrating ship hull is presented. The hull is approximated by a cylinder of the same overall dimensions as the ship and the mode of vibration is approximated by the vibration mode of a uniform free-free Bernoulli-Euler beam. The method has been compared with an analytical solution and with measured results. Finally, a parametric study of the effect of restricted water on the three-dimensional added mass is presented.

Abstract: An experiment was carried out to measure the lateral stability and vertical position of the Centre of Lateral Resistance of a one sixth scale model of the hull of a Dragon yacht when moving at a steady speed through the water. The results obtained showed that the stability with forward motion was up to 7.6% greater than the static stability for the test conditions. It was also found that the actual Centre of Lateral Resistance was 2 1/2% of the draught nearer to the waterline than the design estimate in the upright condition but 6% lower for heel angles …in excess of 20°. For normal sailing conditions, with heel angles in the region of 10°–20°, the conventional design value for the vertical position of the Centre of Lateral Resistance would be a reasonable first approximation.
