Abstract: An examination of the influence of the damping effects on the ship-rolling motion in regular beam seas has been made. The assumed damping includes both the linear and quadratic contributions, where, in particular, for the linear term a given dependence on the heeling angle is taken. An approximate analytical solution in the resonance region was determined by a perturbation method and compared with a computer solution. The results showed that the maximum rolling amplitude attainable for a given excitation is markedly affected by the angle-dependent part which was introduced in the linear damping term.

Abstract: A moment method for analysing the stochastic stability of the roll motion of a ship in an irregular seaway is examined when the restoring moment in the differential equation describing the roll motion is random time dependent in form. It is shown that when the restoring moment is characterized by a white noise process, the roll motion equation can be described by an Ito stochastic differential equation. For the Ito equation, a set of moment equations are derived whose stability is then studied by well developed stability theorems of the deterministic system. Abstract: Using a three-dimensional finite element analysis and potential flow theory, the fluid flow fields around a tanker after a sway or yaw disturbance are illustrated. The tanker is positioned either on the centreline or near a wall in a canal of uniform rectangular cross-section and the flows existing in two water depth conditions are compared.
