The journal International Shipbuilding Progress (ISP) was founded in 1954. Each year two issues appear (in March and September). Publications submitted to ISP should describe scientific work of high international standards, advancing subjects related to the field of Marine Technology, such as:
- Concept development
- General design of ships and offshore objects
- Ship and offshore structural design
- Hydro-mechanics and -dynamics
- Maritime engineering and machinery systems
- Production processes of all types of ships and other objects intended for marine use
- Production technology and material science
- Shipping science, economics, and all directly related subjects
- Ship operations
- Offshore and ocean engineering in relation to the marine environment
- Marine safety
- Efficiency, lifecycle, and environment
- Ice-related aspects for ships and offshore objects.
The contents of the papers may be of a fundamental or of an applied scientific nature and must be of the highest novelty and rigor.

Abstract: A method for calculation of the statistical distribution of maxima of stochastic variables of the type: Y = α i X i + a i j X i X j where {aij } is ‘small’ and {Xi } is a Gaussian distributed stationary stochastic process, is shown. This method is based on an asymptotic series expansion of the probability density function …for { a i j } → 0 , which is compared to the exact solution for: Y = X + ε X 2 and the validity of the asymptotic series is discussed. The statistical distribution of the combined stresses at the deck corner of a ship is calculated according to the present method and some characteristic parameters of the extreme-value statistics are given. These parameters are compared to some standard estimates, which are found to be conservative. At last the possibility of calculating the long-term distribution of maxima of non-linear variables is discussed. Show more

Abstract: Due to increasing ship dimensions and installed propulsive powers resonance frequencies of the propeller-shaft system tend to decrease. Regarding transverse vibrations one has nowadays to be aware of the fact that resonance frequencies can fall within the operating range of the shaft RPM. Therefore a calculation method was designed to have a fairly accurate estimate of the resonance frequencies in the design stage. The method being presented in the underlying report was applied to the shafting of the 3rd generation containerships owned by the Netherlands Shipping Union. The results of the calculation and those of the measurements on …the non-rotating shaft show an acceptable agreement. Recommendations are given for future work on some aspects for which more quantitative data are needed. Show more
