Abstract: This paper depicts the experiments that have been carried out in a towing tank to see the effects of the cylinder speed ratio, the Reynolds number, the cylinder diameter and the cylinder roughness on the lift, the drag and position of the pressure center of the rotating cylinder rudder. It is pointed out that if the cylinder speed ratio surpasses 3.0, the spot where it had been said to be the optimum for the lift, and increases to 5, 10 or even larger, the hft whl sthl rise, though relatively slow. Some special phenomena of the rotating cyhnder rudder are mentioned and interpreted. Tests made to learn the performance of the rotating cylinder rudder in backward velocity showed that the rudder could afford a ship in astern manoeuvring with rapid response and large controlling force.
