Abstract: Although numerical solution techniques for the problem of forced and free lateral vibrations of propeller shaftings are very common nowadays, the classical approximations of Panagopulos or Jasper apparently are still in use and under discussion. Recently Hayama contributed to the matter by correcting Panagopulos’ formula. This publication offers the theoretically exact solution of the dynamic model studied by mentioned authors. Comparisons with their approximative results as well as with computer calculations (finite element method) for actual shaftlines are made. A quick and practical method for roughly estimating the dynamic characteristic of a shaftline in an early design stage is the practical merit of this treatise.
