Abstract: The purpose of this paper is todemonstrate techniques for separating the viscous and inviscid effects of two-dimensional ship sections oscillating in shallow water. Although heaving motion is used for the development, applications to other modes of motion are comparable. The general approach is to use energy considerations, measuring the total energy input as well as the energy absorption by free surface waves. The energy dissipation by viscous effects is obtained by subtraction. The added mass coefficient is obtained, as well as the two damping coefficients: viscous and inviscid. A modified Reynolds number is used to obtain exact scaling abilities of viscous effects, which is not available in ship resistance studies. The experimental solution is characterised by the use of a single model which satisfies both the geometric and dynamic scaling parameters.
