Abstract: Plasma flow control, based on the plasma aerodynamic actuation generated by air discharge, is an active field in aerodynamics due to its potential application in performance improvement of future aircraft. In order to better understand the underlying physical mechanism of plasma flow control, it is important to investigate the relationship between the operating parameters and the plasma aerodynamic actuation characteristics. This paper reports the electrical, optical and mechanical characteristics of surface dielectric …barrier discharge plasma aerodynamic actuation excited by microsecond and nanosecond high voltage waveforms. The nanosecond discharge is more diffuser than the microsecond discharge and the discharge current is much larger at the same applied voltage amplitude. The optical emission intensity of the nanosecond discharge plasma is stronger than that of the microsecond discharge plasma, while the rotational and vibrational temperatures of N_{2} in the nanosecond discharge plasma are less. In addition, the relative intensity of the first negative system of N_2^+ (B^2 Σ _u^+ → X^2 Σ _g^+ ) and the second positive system of N_2 (C^3 Π _u → B^3 Π _g ) is much less in the nanosecond discharge plasma. The velocity measurements indicate that the air flow induced by the nanosecond discharge plasma aerodynamic actuation is vertical to the dielectric surface, while that induced by the microsecond discharge actuation is parallel to the dielectric surface. Abstract: A tuned fluid damper (TLD) is a dynamic absorber which uses hydrodynamic force of sloshing in a container to dampen oscillations of structures. The TLD using a magnetic fluid as working fluid is called a tuned magnetic fluid damper (TMFD). Sloshing of the magnetic fluid is controlled by the magnetic field on the TMFD. It is important to get the state of the sloshing, thus the change of the fluid level and the fluid pressure of the …magnetic fluid is studied in several magnetic fields. The change of them is affected by the resonant sloshing of vertical component and not by the resonance of the main (horizontal) sloshing. Show more

Abstract: This paper presents the measurement of the magnetic field distribution and electronic thrust of atmospheric pressure glow discharge (APGD) plasma at flat panel. The characteristics of APGD plasma and its some mechanism problems have been investigated from a new point of view. The distribution of the magnetic intensity around the APGD low-temperature plasma and its electronic thrust were measured respectively. The results show that the directional airflow induced by APGD plasma is related to the distribution …of the magnetic field, and the electronic thrust of APGD plasma is influenced by the structure of the APGD plasma actuators. The experimental study is significant for the further study about the characteristics of APGD low-temperature plasma. Show more

Abstract: This paper investigates vibration control via electromagnetic shunt damping. A new damper based on electromagnetic shunt damping is designed, and mathematical model of the damper is developed to obtain the equivalent damping coefficient. Simulation of the vibration control of a SDOF system is conducted. Results of the simulation reveal that the new electromagnetic shunt damper can greatly attenuate vibration transmitted to structures.

Abstract: In this study, first, the forced vibration response of a three-link stand-up robot is investigated theoretically. The stand-up robot consists of an arm link, a body link and a leg link. Considering the vibration analysis results, the trajectory planning algorithm for the stand-up motion control by using a touch sensor attached to the body link is devised. In the stand-up motion control, initially, the vibrational swing motion control of the arm link starts. Then, immediately after …the time when the touch sensor signal is on for the first time, the swing motion control of the leg link starts, and after a brief interval, the vibrational swing motion control of the arm link finishes. Furthermore, the stand-up motion control system consisting of the trajectory planning and the joint angle tracking controller is constructed. Moreover, the experiments of the stand-up motion control have been carried out, and it is confirmed that the stand-up motion control could be well executed. Show more

Abstract: This paper characterizes a newly designed biaxial extensometer which is capable of measuring radial deformation of circular porous materials under simultaneous hydro-compression loading conditions. The biaxial extensometer sensitivity is calculated using finite-element model, and the calculated sensitivity is verified through experimental calibration. Result shows that the biaxial extensometer responses linearly to an extremely large deformation ranging from −10 mm to 10 mm. Furthermore, it can be reliably operated under high hydrostatic pressure …environment. Show more

Abstract: In this study, the quasi-minimum time trajectory planning method for the electromagnetic attraction transfer control of a magnetic object by use of a two-joint robot arm with an electromagnetic attraction hand is proposed. In the quasi-minimum time trajectory planning, the trajectory polynomial expression is derived by using the boundary and continuous conditions of joint angle, joint angle velocity, and the trajectory is expressed using three genes of genetic algorithm. Then, using three genes and the genetic …algorithm and defining the fitness function for the quasi-minimum time trajectory, the quasi-minimum time trajectory planning algorithm is constructed. The fitness function is defined using two constraint conditions for the allowable maximum moment applied to the magnetic object and allowable rated DC motor torque. Furthermore, the numerical calculations and the experiments are demonstrated, and the usefulness of the present quasi-minimum time trajectory planning method is confirmed. Show more

Abstract: This paper describes a comparison of thermal characteristics of stator shapes and frames in switched reluctance motor. It has been published that stator shapes and frame shapes had a large influence on noise and vibration performance, but thermal characteristics haven't been studied. Four different stator shapes were analyzed by using transient magnetic analysis in order to calculate the losses, which were taken into thermal analysis as heat source. Three dimensional finite element thermal analyses was then …carried out to study four different stators with same basic dimension, and it was found that the square shape was most heat conductive. Frames including conventional axial ribbed aluminum frame, axial ribbed iron casting frame, radial ribbed frame, no ribbed frame were modeled and analyzed. The simulation results could be used to help make a choice between different stators and frames considering both vibration behavior and thermal behavior. Show more

Abstract: A novel single power hybrid asymmetrical multilevel converter (SPHAMC) topology is proposed. By adding an assistant leg to control the neutral-point voltage independently, the presented converter conquers the difficulties of controlling the neutral-point voltage and the sub-converter capacitor voltages in traditional SPHAMCs. The related control strategies are studied in this paper. In order to ensure the stability of the sub-converter capacitor voltages, a PI regulator is employed to control the main converter …output voltage. Redundant states selection (RSS) and duty cycle modulation (DCM) methods are implemented to regulate the sub-converter capacitor voltages during each output voltage period. The simulation results as well as experimental ones illustrate the validity and efficiency of the proposed topology and control strategies. Show more
