Abstract: A group of Italian researchers in the field of neural processing systems proposed to the Italian government a project in the field of Neural Networks for environmental data processing. The project has been funded, and started to be operative at the beginning of 2001. A major objective of the project is that of focusing the potential of the research group in the field of neural modelling to the problem of environmental management in order to produce, …at the end of the project period, powerful prediction tools in environmental applications. Air and electromagnetic pollution together with water resources management are the specific environmental problems to which the predictive neural models will be particularised and applied. Show more

Abstract: We have proposed the method for recognition of the signals polluted with noise using modification of spectral envelopes shape. However, these spectral envelopes have wrong valleys. For that reason recognition rate is not improved. There is plenty of scope for improvement. In this paper, we propose that method for extracting particular feature by the discrete wavelet transform. (Wavelet transform is widely used for the extraction of particular feature from data.) Pattern recognition rate is improved by …the new method. It was shown that the wavelet analysis was one of the promising methodologies for the pattern recognition noisy signal. Show more

Abstract: The present work describes a system for automatic summarizing of texts. Rather than focusing on abstracts -- a hard NLP task of not asserted effectiveness the system produces extracts through selection of most important sentences in the original text. Statistical concepts are involved in order to evaluate the degree of significance of words, groups of words and sentences. Currently both Japanese and English texts can be treated. Procedures for computing importance, information content of sentences and …measures of correlation between sentences are implemented. Comments are given on the feasibility of the approach and future developments. Show more

Abstract: In this paper, the theories and general concept of the topology optimization in the electromagnetic system are explained, and the applications to the optimal design of electromagnetic devices and the inverse problems are shown. As a way of defining the relationship between the design variables and material properties, homogenization method or density method can be used. The mutual energy method is also explained for the design sensitivity analysis in the topology optimization.

Abstract: This paper describes how to simulate magnetic levitation of a thin steel plate by using electromagnets. Since the levitation system is essentially unstable, the steel plate is levitated by controlling the attractive force produced by the electromagnets with feedback signals: the displacement and velocity of the steel plate and the current of the electromagnet. The motion equation of the steel plate is solved by the finite difference method. The attractive magnetic force by electromagnets is obtained …by using the finite element method. Show more

Abstract: It is required to clarify the characteristics of forced vibration with magnetic damping for an earthquake-resistant design of conductive thin shell structures located in an electromagnetic field. In this paper, the characteristics of forced vibration are examined using finite element tightly coupled analysis and single-degree-of-freedom coupled model. The results show that the change of resonance frequency is different from that of general viscous damping problems for some combinations of material properties and …magnetic fields. It is pronounced when the eddy current decay rate is close to the natural period of the structure. Show more

Abstract: It has been confirmed that a thin steel plate can be levitated by controlling the current of electromagnets. However, the plate gets out of position in the case of high-speed conveyance of the steel plate if there is no force for restraining the plate from slipping horizontally. Then, electromagnets for controlling the horizontal position are installed. In this paper, we study how the elastic vibration of the steel plate is affected by the magnetic field produced …by the electromagnets. The magnetic force pulls back the steel plate to its center. With the magnetic field produced by the electromagnets, the frequency of the vibration increases and the vibration is attenuated more rapidly. In addition, the tensile force makes the steel plate flat. Show more

Abstract: In the previous paper [1], a novel type of semi-active damper that is composed of a cylinder injected with Magnetic Fluid (M.F.) and a magnetic flux controller was proposed for improving the ride comfort of trains. In this paper, at first, a modified model considering nonlinear characteristic of M.F. such as a Non-Newtonian-Fluid is proposed. Next, in order to enhance the control effects, two kinds of improvements are made in the semi-active damper. One is to …change the voltage control input to an electromagnet into the current control input. The other is to expand the control range for the M.F. damper by means of feeding a bias current to the electromagnet. Finally, the effects of the improved semi-active damper are shown by various digital simulations and vibration experiments. Show more

Abstract: A numerical study was carried out on the electrostatic sticking of a charged paper to photoreceptor in electrostatic transfer process for electrophotography. Numerical procedures to predict sticking of the paper were presented which consists of (1) determination of initial angle of the paper, (2) estimation of electric field intensity, (3) estimation of charge on paper created by Paschen's air breakdown, (4) estimation of electrostatic force acting on the paper and (5) calculation of deformation of paper. …Deformation of the charged paper in electric field was numerically simulated according to the procedures and the dependencies of paper sticking on photoreceptor size and initial angle of paper were quantitatively clarified. It is clarified that the smaller and softer photoreceptor improves sticking of paper. Show more
