The aim of the International Journal of Applied Electromagnetics and Mechanics is to contribute to intersciences coupling applied electromagnetics, mechanics and materials. Abstract: Bioinstrumentation has been used in the automotive industry to evaluate the ride comfort level of different vehicles. However, there have been no studies attempting to incorporate bioinstrumentation in the controls. In this paper, we propose a ride comfort control system using the psychological state of the driver as estimated through bioinstrumentation. To evaluate the psychological state of the driver, we use the driver’s heart rate variability, which allows us to calculate the R-R interval and the LF/HF, the values of which reflect the activities of the autonomic nervous system. In this paper, we investigated the usefulness of a ride comfort …control system using adequate bioinstrumentation and switching criterions for the system. As the results indicate, the drivers become relaxed when using the ride comfort control system as based on their psychological state. Abstract: In the transport system of a thin steel plate production line, the quality of the plate surface deteriorates over time because of contact with rollers. As a solution to this problem, the noncontact transportation of steel plates using an electromagnetic force has been proposed. To improve the levitation performance of the conventional magnetic levitation system, we have proposed the use of an electromagnet to control the horizontal displacement of the steel plate. Abstract: When an ultrathin and flexible steel plate is to be levitated, levitation control becomes difficult because the ultrathin steel plate undergoes increased flexure. We have proposed the levitation of an ultrathin steel plate that is bent to an extent that does not induce plastic deformation. In this study to elucidate the levitation stability under disturbance, a random disturbance was input into the levitation system and bending levitation experiments were carried out using an ultrathin steel plate with a thickness of 0.19 mm.

Abstract: In a plating process, a steel plate is conveyed for 20–50 m in the vertical direction for drying, during which it is weakly supported by rollers or other devices, resulting in uneven plating due to vibration and other productivity-reducing factors. We developed a non-contact guide system for a high-speed traveling elastic steel plate in which electromagnetic forces are applied by actuators on the edges of the plate to control its position. Furthermore, we conducted a travelling experiment in which permanent magnets were installed in the linear part of the steel plate to suppress the vibrational effects. We report the results …of our experiment and simulations to show the effectiveness of our proposed method. By placing the permanent magnets at the antinodes of vibration in the linear portion, vibration in the loop-shaped part were suppressed. Abstract: Thin steel plates are widely used in various industrial products. However, deterioration of their surface quality and metal plating occur to movement. As a solution to these problems, non-contact transportation of a steel plate using electromagnetic force has been proposed. In this study, a thin steel plate (0.24 mm thickness) was magnetically levitated, and we carried out experiments using the one-degree of freedom model and continuous model for levitation control to determine the effect of a magnetic field from the horizontal direction applied to the levitated steel plate on its elastic vibration.

Abstract: To overcome ill-posed problem of force identification in the Transfer Path Analysis (TPA) of a rocket engine, this paper proposes a novel TPA based on weighted Tikhonov regularization. Firstly, the upper bound of relative force identification error of the traditional TPA is derived. Secondly, weighting matrix and Bayesian theory are adopted to improve the accuracy of force identification, and then the theory of the improved TPA is built. Finally, a ground vibration testing of the rocket engine is performed to analyze its path contributions. The results show that the proposed TPA is more accurate than the traditional TPA.

Abstract: In order to predict multi-points frequency domain vibration response in the situation of unknown uncorrelated multi-source loads, a new multi-points vibration response prediction method in frequency domain is proposed. This new method is based on transfer functions and uncorrelated multi-source loads identification. After getting the system’s transfer functions from all uncorrelated multi-source loads to all the measurement points and vibration response of the known measurement points, the unknown uncorrelated multi-source loads in frequency domain can be identified by least square generalized inverse. Then, the vibration response of the unknown measurement points can be predicted through multiplying the identification uncorrelated multi-source …loads and the system’s transfer functions from all uncorrelated multi-source loads to all the unknown measurement points. Abstract: Genset is usually used as the electricity generator and known for its stability thanks to its rotating inertia. With the population growth, the electricity demand is increased. Due to the limited amount of fossil energy resources and the climate-friendly issues, the renewable energy integration becomes higher. However, the intermittence of these resources can destabilize the grid. To integrate these renewable energies by behaving as genset with its rotating inertia, the Virtual Synchronous Machine concept is implemented in a microgrid.

Abstract: An energy-efficient description of electromagnetism based on a reversible interpretation of Faraday’s Law is described. Space aggregation and time reconciliation of all scales involved in power system management are derived from two constants of motion, respectively Gibbs free energy and kinetic energy embedded in the whole system. At the upper space scale, a simplified description of the grid based on the Kuramoto model is proved to be suitable for assessing the stability of the synchronous state of a power system. In addition, the Gibbs free energy embedded in the power grid takes the form of a X − Y …lattice-gas Hamiltonian, showing the critical role of reactive power in maintaining synchronism. Abstract: In this study, the flexural fatigue property of a novel implantable lead with a Ni–Ti braided cable was investigated. The effects of heat-treatment and braiding parameters on the flexural fatigue life of the braided cable were evaluated through modifying quantity of filaments, braiding angle and core diameter. The results of flexural fatigue testing demonstrated that (a) heat-treatment improved the flexural fatigue life of the Ni–Ti braided cable from a few thousand to more than 10 million cycles and (b) flexural fatigue property of the super-elastic Ni–Ti braided cable can be improved with the increase in quantity of filaments and braiding …angle.
