Abstract: In the present paper, we report results about the preparation and the morphological, thermal, mechanical and electrical characterization of new materials for the impregnation of rotor and stator windings of medium power traction motors. These new materials are obtained by the addition of nano-sized alumina (Al_{2} O_{3} ) fillers to commercially available silicone resin. Their measured physical properties are compared with those of the unfilled matrix, used as a reference, and the …influence of the weight concentrations, ranging between 1 wt % and 7 wt % is fully discussed. Abstract: In this paper the FEM-RBCI method is successfully applied to the analysis of the scattering of time-harmonic electromagnetic waves at optical frequencies from metallic nanoparticles. Plasmons are taken into account by modelling the nanoparticles by means of appropriate complex permittivities. The method is valid whatever the shape of the nanoparticles. Numerical examples are provided to validate the method.

Abstract: A structure aimed at modeling a polymeric nanocomposite loaded with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is simulated by considering, in a three-dimensional space, a random distribution of impenetrable conducting cylinders inside an insulating cubic matrix. The variation of the electrical conductivity of the structure for different volume loadings of the conducting phase is estimated through a 3D resistor network. The tunneling effect between conducting clusters which is deemed responsible of the global conductivity is taken into account. …By using a Monte Carlo method, the electrical conductivity and the percolation thresholds of the obtained structures are analyzed as a function of geometrical and physical influencing parameters. Abstract: Fluxset magnetic sensor based probes with single and double exciting coils have been developed for detecting weakly interacting, low mass and small size magnetic particles. Test measurements were performed on capsules containing 0.15–13.53 mg magnetic iron oxide particles. It was shown that even 0.7 mg of magnetic nanoparticle of size 30 nm could be detected from a distance of 3.5 mm with reliable signal to noise ratio.

Abstract: The generation of airborne ultrasound is presented using the thermoacoustic principle applied to carbon materials at the micro- and nanoscale. Such materials are shown to be capable of emitting ultrasound when being fed by an alternating current. We tested the acoustic performance of carbon fibers, bucky papers and electrospun polyacrylonitrile-derived carbon nanofibers and determined the sound pressure for frequencies up to 350 kHz. A comparison between the experimental results and the theoretical prediction …showed remarkable agreement for frequencies up to 150 kHz. Beyond 150 kHz, we found slight deviations from the expected sound pressure dependence on the square root of the frequency. Show more

Abstract: The Self-Organizing Map is a computational method for the visualization and analysis of high-dimensional data. Self Organizing Maps have been applied to ASDEX Upgrade data to define an ordered mapping of an 8-dimensional plasma parameter space onto a regular, 2-dimensional grid. The map has been used to track the plasma trajectory during the experiments and monitor the disruption risk. In order to face with ever new operational conditions, a periodical updating of the Self Organizing Map …is proposed. Show more

Abstract: Due to unavoidable tolerances in components construction and assembly, the actual magnetic field in Tokamak devices differs from the nominal one. The experimental studies nowadays available indicate a strong impact of the error fields on the plasma stability in next generation, large size, devices. Therefore, a careful preliminary analysis aimed at evaluating the impact of possible error field sources, to define tolerance ranges and assess the effect of current feeders, was envisaged before realization of ITER …reactor. The paper discusses the tools used to perform ITER tolerance analysis, from the viewpoints of two possible approaches to tolerancing, which are statistical analysis and worst case analysis. The two methods aim to get different characterizations of devices performance, and a critical comparison of drawbacks and advantages of both methods is reported. Show more

Abstract: Nuclear fusion in magnetic confinement devices is one of the most challenging application fields for electromagnetics and mechanics. In particular antennas, charged with the task of handling and delivering high power to the plasma, have to operate in a harsh environment with very demanding thermal and mechanical requirements. Within this scenario, the use of tools able to efficiently predict the antenna behaviour is mandatory. In the present work, the TOrino Polytechnic Ion Cyclotron Antenna (TOPICA) code …has been used to simulate the real 3D geometry of two launchers, generally operating at 30 MHz and presently installed on the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. The working frequency belongs to the Ion-Cyclotron range of frequencies that was proven to achieve very efficient plasma heating. Antenna performances are presented in terms of coupled power and RF potentials for different realistic plasma scenarios taken from ASDEX Upgrade. Show more

Abstract: The ITER tokamak is a very complex electromagnetic system that requires a careful assessment for for assuring its reliable operation as well as its mechanical integrity. In this paper we discuss the effects of the fast electromagnetic transients on the superconducting magnet system. Of particular complexity is the analysis of the quench detection system of the TF coils that can be improperly triggered by the spurious signals due to the inductive coupling with the plasma and …the other active and passive magnetic field sources.
