Abstract: We consider a high frequency, monochromatic, electromagnetic focus wave mode propagating in the z -direction of a chiral isotropic medium. For the directions z>0 and z<0 , we get two different solutions and we discuss some implications of this result.

Abstract: The mechanism of piezoelectric transformers for producing high voltage is incorporated into a ceramic beam bimorph piezoelectric gyroscope for generating high voltage sensing signal. For the analysis of the gyroscope, one-dimensional equations of beam piezoelectric bimorphs are derived from the three-dimensional equations of linear piezoelectricity. The equations are employed in the analysis of the bimorph gyroscope. Free and forced vibration solutions are obtained showing high voltage sensitivity.

Abstract: A numerical solution for a one-dimensional, nonlinear wave propagation problem of thermo-magneto-elasticity for the elastic, perfectly conducting half-space is presented. The results are discussed and compared to the case of no magnetic field, to investigate the effect of the latter on the mechanical displacement and on the temperature. The used numerical method relies on a finite difference scheme and has proved to be efficient in dealing with such problems.

Abstract: Electric fatigue affects the lifetime of ferroelectric materials and has been a major problem in commercial applications of these materials. So it is important to understand ferroelectric fatigue for reliability improvement. This paper proposed a phenomenological model for ferroelectric fatigue based on the structural inhomogeneities by an analogue of the Orowan’s mechanical fatigue theory for conventional materials (Orowan, 1948). This model is very simple, but it does have a number of appealing properties and can describe some fatigue phenomena well. It qualitatively describes the remnant polarization decay as a function of the number of switching cycles; the shorting of highly …fatigued samples is caused by the growth of conducting defects. Abstract: A numerical simulation model for the growth of {\rm Ga}_x{\rm In}_{1-x}{\rm Sb} by the traveling heater method (THM) is presented. In a thermodynamically rational mathematical model, the momentum equations including the solutal and thermal buoyancy terms, the mass transport equations in terms of the mole fractions of components, the interface mass conservation equations and the phase equilibrium equations are presented for a two-dimensional axisymmetric growth cell configuration. The cell configuration and the furnace thermal profile are adopted from the experimental setup of Amistar Research Inc. The field equations are solved numerically by an adaptive finite element procedure …as the interfaces between the solid and liquid phases change in time. The fully-implicit time integration technique is adopted to solve the transient equations, and the resulting non-linear algebraic equations are solved by the Newton–Raphson method. Numerical results show that the furnace thermal profile, the thermal as well as solutal convection in the liquid solution have significant effects on the growth process. Results are only presented for small growth times. However, it is asserted that the present simulation model could be used to simulate the entire THM growth process of ternary alloys if the required computational power is available. Show more

Abstract: In order to investigate the effect of gravity on the mixing of indium (In) and antimony (Sb) melts under the uniform temperature, an In–Sb sample without a free melt surface was melted and solidified both under microgravity and on earth. In the earth-processed sample, the indium concentration was not uniform because of the gravitational segregation. On the other hand, the indium concentration in the space-processed sample became fairly uniform. From the measurement of concentration distribution in the solidified samples, the effective diffusion coefficient of indium into Sb was estimated to be (1.3–2.4) × 10^{-4} cm^{2} /s. During …the cooling process, many InSb needle crystals were formed and finally residual solution was solidified. Show more
