Human Systems Management (HSM) is an interdisciplinary, international, refereed journal. It addresses the need to mentally grasp and to in-form the managerial and societally organizational impact of high technology, i.e., the technology of self-governance and self-management.
The gap or gulf is often vast between the ideas world-class business enterprises and organizations employ and what mainstream business journals address. The latter often contain discussions that practitioners pragmatically refute, a problematic situation also reflected in most business schools’ inadequate curriculæ.
To reverse this trend, HSM attempts to provide education, research and theory commensurate to the needs to today’s world-class, capable business professionals. Namely the journal’s purposefulness is to archive research that actually helps business enterprises and organizations self-develop into prosperously successful human systems.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: The textual description of a public service crowdfunding project is an important factor influencing the audience’s donation behavior, but the existing studies on the textual characteristics of the project are rather scattered. OBJECTIVE: This paper attempts to systematically sort out the characteristics of project texts along the lines of linguistic and non-linguistic factors, clarifying the relationship between the characteristics of project texts, project sources, and social donation behavior. METHODS: Based on Aristotle’s persuasion theory, language factors are measured from three dimensions of appeal to personality, appeal to logic, and appeal to emotion, while other text …features unrelated to persuasive language are classified as non-language factors. When discussing the influence path of linguistic and non-linguistic factors on donation behavior, this paper controls the project type to test the moderating role played by the identity characteristics of crowdfunding initiators. RESULTS: The results show that the use of personality-based language (third-person words), logic-based language (money words and quantitative words), and emotion-based language (tone of voice and negative emotions) all have a significant positive effect on the audience’s donation behavior, while the use of second-person words in personality-based language has a negative effect on donation behavior; the identity of the project initiator (project origin) plays a complex and diverse moderating role in the influence of project text features on donation behavior. CONCLUSION: There are obvious differences in the description of different text strategies adopted by the project initiator. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: In the last 15 years, theoretical discussions, and empirical research on the domain of business models have grown significantly. Different authors understand and focus on either constituencies of business models or narratives. The question remains what the predictive value of business model is. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this interdisciplinary conceptual paper is to investigate and discuss business models as scientific models. METHODS: This article is conceptual, although previous studies on business models enrich this discussion. RESULTS: A narrative perspective on business models shows that they also have a predictive value that is expressed …through language not in numbers, maps, and diagrams. The process of reflexivity that is contextualised and bounded in the form of a narrative lies at the centre of designing and changing the business model. The article provides substantial discussion on business models as scientific models, and their predictive power. These concepts have not been deeply discussed yet. CONCLUSIONS: An argument is provided to support the proposition that business models can be considered as scientific models that is, however, embedded in specific organizational, cultural, and technological contexts. Future research needs to be directed towards the empirical analysis of narratives in companies. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Given the growing issues in environmental management, there is a need to respond to this increasing pressure by implementing the strategy of sustainability like green human resource management. OBJECTIVE: The study focuses on examining the influence of practicing green human resource management activities on environmental performance. The research also explores the interplay of Green HRM, green innovation, and service leadership in influencing environmental performance. METHODS: The technique of SEM analysis was applied to examine the direct and indirect effects. The data was captured from 328 employees of the Indian IT sector. RESULTS: The …findings indicated the positive and significant mediating role of green innovation (product and process) between Green HRM and Environmental performance. Servant leadership also moderates their relationship thereby strengthening the positive influence of Green HRM on environmental performance. CONCLUSIONS: The large industries need to upgrade their system to GHRM for embedding green values, culture, and attitudes in the organization. Hiring the employees with environmental consciousness, training, and rewarding them for the promotion of an environmentally friendly culture promote green innovation. These practices with green innovation and servant leadership ensure that green initiatives are instilled in employees for the responsible behavior for positive environmental performance, which is a global need. Abstract: BACKGROUND: The increase of technological complexity at the workplace has encouraged researchers to pay more attention to the stress employees experience while constantly learning and adapting to new technologies. This study considers employee silence as a passive coping strategy in response to technological complexity. OBJECTIVE: This study examines whether self-efficacy mediates the effect of technological complexity on employee silence (i.e., quiescence and acquiescence) and whether social support interacts with technological complexity to influence self-efficacy and thereby employee silence. METHODS: Using a web-based survey, the data were collected from 206 full-time employees working in different sectors in …France. RESULTS: Results indicate that technological complexity is positively associated with employee silence (i.e., quiescence and acquiescence silence) and that self-efficacy mediates the effect of technological complexity on employee silence. However, the effects of technological complexity are less pronounced when individuals have access to a large pool of social support. CONCLUSION: Managers are encouraged to introduce HR policies that motivate employees to speak up about the use of complex technology at the workplace by leveraging different social support programs. Abstract: PURPOSE: This study aims to bridge the literature gap and provide a comprehensive and clear vision of managing Human Capital risk through an easy-to-apply risk management methodology. In addition, to provide an integrated process to manage Human Capital risks. METHODOLOGY: This paper conducted a mixed-method approach; risks were gathered by analyzing 14 semi-structured interviews with corporate leaders and HR expertise in 14 ICT companies in Isfahan. In the quantitative phase, variables were assessed by two methods; FMEA and Fuzzy analysis in 14 companies. FINDINGS: Results show that despite realizing the importance of human capital in achieving …goals and competitiveness, companies are not ready to mitigate the Human Capital risks. Detected Risks are divided into behavioural and attitudinal risks. The Employees’ demotivation, Leaving work after receiving the required training, and Lack of commitment to the delivery time or quality are the most urgent risks that should be mitigated as prior in the ICT companies in Isfahan. ORIGINALITY: This paper is one of the few studies that holistically dealt with Human Capital risks by providing practical and managerial strategies and recommendations to mitigate the risk exposure. Abstract: BACKGROUND: Digitalization widely connected the MNCs and urban consumers. Though not much efforts were made to reach the rural markets, the Indian government must recognize the problems and challenges to digitally connect such rural consumers. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to highlight the problems and challenges that the Indian rural markets are currently undergoing through digital transformation and also discusses the possible avenues for rural development and growth of the national economy. METHODS: This paper studies the extant literature on the Indian rural market and understands its potential resources for which the Indian government is leveraging efforts …for the national wide digitalization. The study conducted focused group discussion (FGD) with 23 industrial digital marketing experts who are working in rural areas. RESULTS: The findings illustrated literacy rate, resources non-availability, obsolete traditions and culture, unemployment, low income, crime and violence as problems; communication barriers, lack of government coordination, inadequate media coverage, lack of infrastructure, varying purchasing decisions as challenges; easiness through ICT, penetrating into export-import markets, expanding consumer markets, increase in employment as exciting opportunities. CONCLUSIONS: This research highlights the most potential barriers of rural markets and suggests a steady approach of digitalization to bring the rural consumers closer to the entrepreneurs. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: We only believe the components of our study, namely: the subject (the organizational configuration), the circumstance (COVID-19), and the context (Tunisia) together constitute the originality of our research. Indeed, to our knowledge, no study has been carried out so far on the typical configurations for managing the COVID-19 crisis in a Tunisian context. We think, therefore, that we are the first to do so. OBJECTIVE: In a context of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis which is currently affecting our planet and which has had a huge impact on all levels (health, economic and social), our research seeks …make a further contribution to the study of organizational configurations or archetypes in the field of crisis management . More specifically, our research principally aims, on the one hand, to describe the forms taken by organizations when they are facing a crisis of great magnitude such as - the COVID-19 crisis - and on the other hand, to identify a taxonomy making it possible to highlight the recurring axes of action on which the actors rely to manage a crisis. METHODS: Our methodological framework is based on the phenomenological paradigm in the human sciences which integrates the meaning given by man to the world around him [1 ] and which takes into account the subjectivity of the actors. Our positioning in favor of the phenomenological paradigm leads to the adoption of a qualitative research method . At this level, we carried out twenty-four semi-structured interviews in twenty Tunisian companies that were able to resist during the pandemic COVID-19 crisis and have managed to last at least until the present day. RESULTS: We identified three archetypes on the basis of five organizational factors that we inspired from the onion model of [2 ] and qualified it as configuration “determinants”, namely: strategy, structure, culture, leadership, and people. These archetypes are: the humanist communitarian, the perfectionist mobilizer, and the incrementalist pragmatic. CONCLUSIONS: We therefore believe that our research has enriched the configurational perspective by defining archetypes capable of managing a major crisis such as the COVID-19 crisis. The archetypes thus identified in our study may constitute typical models to be followed by companies wishing to resist the health crisis that is not yet over and whose repercussions can last for a long time. Abstract: PURPOSE: The purpose of this short communication is to provide theoretical considerations that support Human Resources (HR) professionals’ decisions regarding the development of a post COVID-19 pandemic career resilient Generation Z’s workforce. Building on the work of Pataki-Bittó & Kapusy [1 ] and Pichler, Kohli & Granitz [2 ], an effort to provide practical recommendations, that align workplace policies and practices with Generation Z’s work values will be made, in order to develop a resilient workforce. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The authors review literature on Generation Z, namely regarding the factors that shaped their underlying development and consequent work values. Furthermore, …literature regarding current organizational policies and practices focused on this generation was reviewed. FINDINGS: Although the recommendations made here allow worker integration and a better person-organization fit, this conceptual framework also suggests that very little is known about this generation, and as such, no one-size-fits-all recommendation exists for managers. It is our understanding that the recommendations set out here must be adapted to each organizational context, and each manager should pay more attention to its content than its form. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: This short communication presents a reflection regarding recommendations, that align workplace policies and practices with Generation Z’s work values, in order to develop a career resilient workforce. It is a work that combines previous works and as such it offers a more encompassing systematization of the latest recommendations regarding this generation. Show more
