Human Systems Management (HSM) is an interdisciplinary, international, refereed journal. It addresses the need to mentally grasp and to in-form the managerial and societally organizational impact of high technology, i.e., the technology of self-governance and self-management.
The gap or gulf is often vast between the ideas world-class business enterprises and organizations employ and what mainstream business journals address. The latter often contain discussions that practitioners pragmatically refute, a problematic situation also reflected in most business schools’ inadequate curriculæ.
To reverse this trend, HSM attempts to provide education, research and theory commensurate to the needs to today’s world-class, capable business professionals. Namely the journal’s purposefulness is to archive research that actually helps business enterprises and organizations self-develop into prosperously successful human systems.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Different preferences of the customers and their product judgments have been widely neglected in the literature despite their significant influence on decision-making. Hence, decision-makers must recognize customers’ rating evaluations based on their satisfaction that interact with their different behaviours (quality- and prestige-seeking). OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to ascertain the different behaviors of the customers that influence their product judgment in ratings which change the informational role of the ratings. METHODS: This study was empirically conducted based on survey results from 20000 mobile phone customers and showed their different behaviours in their rating evaluations by using …a non-recursive SPSS model. RESULTS: The results of our study reveal that: the rating evaluation of quality-seeking customers is carried out with a higher average rating and a lower variance, for prestige-seeking customers are carried out with a higher average rating and a higher variance. Overall, the variance of ratings distribution varies towards two groups of the customers while their ratings evaluations carried out with similar average ratings, in the context of customers’ rating evaluation and their different behaviour. CONCLUSIONS: This study has provided preliminary evidence for different behavioral customer rating evaluations which is crucial in both business owners and potential consumers’ decision-making process. Abstract: BACKGROUND: Scholars have called for studies to adopt a more holistic perspective to conduct multilevel examinations of leadership processes, but corresponding empirical studies are rare. Besides, researches on the relationship of paradoxical leadership with team innovation and individual innovation are still in the exploratory stage. OBJECTIVE: Integrating paradoxical leadership theory, role system theory and role engagement theory, we developed a multilevel, dual process model to explore the mechanisms through which paradoxical leadership simultaneously affect individual innovation and team innovation. METHODS: Based on the multiphase, multisource data collected from 367 employees of 80 teams in Fujian and …Jiangsu province in China, Structural equation model (SEM) and Hierarchical Linear Model (HLM) were applied to analyze the survey data. RESULTS: Our empirical results revealed that, (1) At the individual level, role engagement positively contributes to individual innovation. (2) At the team level, paradoxical leadership exerted positive influence on team innovation, and team coordination mediates the relationship between paradoxical leadership and team innovation. (3) At the cross level, paradoxical leadership positively contributed to individual innovation, and the variables role engagement and team coordination play a cross-level mediation role in the relationship of paradoxical leadership and individual innovation. Furthermore, team coordination moderates the relationship between role engagement and individual innovation. CONCLUSIONS: By combining paradoxical leadership theory, role system theory and role engagement theory, we proposed a multilevel theoretical framework, taking a meaningful step for explaining the relationship and the influence mechanism between paradoxical leadership and team innovation and individual innovation. Our finding inspires leaders at all levels of the organization to leverage paradoxical leadership to engage the contradictions and competing demands pervade in the workplace and organizations effectively, and gain comfort from discomfort, and further achieve good innovation performance. We hope our research can offer a basis for management research and practice in this complex set. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Initiating knowledge management activities has proved challenging in many organizations as focus on wrong activities and not providing adequate leadership cause many failures. Leadership style significantly determines success of knowledge management activities, specifically activities related to knowledge infrastructure that consist of organizational culture, organizational structure and information technology. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to analyse how transformational and transactional leadership styles influence knowledge infrastructure which provides organizations a platform on which knowledge management can be developed. METHODS: PLS-SEM was used to analyse data obtained from 135 valid questionnaires. RESULTS: Transformational and …transactional leadership styles both positively influence all three factors of knowledge infrastructure (organizational culture, organizational structure and information technology). The influence of transformational leadership style is, however, statistically significantly stronger. CONCLUSIONS: Based on research findings managers should use more transformational leadership elements when promoting knowledge management initiatives in organizations. Nevertheless transactional leadership style should be also used especially contingency reward as its dominant factor. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: The development of sustainable HRM contributed to the increasing interest in practices encompassing the sustainable management of human resources (sustainable HRM, SHRM) and results of these practices. The paper introduces a new perspective upon the contribution of SHRM to creating value. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present paper is to develop a conceptual framework linking the idea of SHRM with organizational value, and to determine the strength of an HRM system. METHODS: Methods applied in the study include the analysis and synthesis of scientific literature and a critical discussion considering provided references. The issue is …discussed on the basis of a considerable number of theories, including the knowledge-based theory, stakeholder theory, and AMO framework. RESULTS: The results of the present study indicate that sustainable human resource management plays a significant and positive role in achieving organizational outcomes. It was shown that SHRM practices influence three levels of outcomes: (1) the organization (e.g. quality, efficiency, flexibility, innovation, profits), (2) society (e.g. stakeholder satisfaction, employment growth, social inclusion) and (3) the individual (e.g. good work-life balance, engagement, employability). Moreover, via the strength of the HRM system, it exerts an additional impact upon employees and external stakeholders. CONCLUSIONS: The managerial implications are for the corporate leaders to recognize the critical role of SHRM practices in implementing sustainable development and achieving economic, social and environmental benefits. For the academics, this paper is a wake-up call to extend research to investigate unexplored relationships between SHRM and performance/value. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: The article discusses various approaches to the concept of ‘human capital’. OBJECTIVE: In the modern economy, human capital is becoming the most important factor in economic growth and determines the future of the country. The purpose of the research is to analyse the index of human capital in Kazakhstan, what factors have an influence and find ways to increase it. METHODS: Various methods were used, including analysis and synthesis, measurement and comparison. RESULTS: Based on the analysis of qualitative and quantitative parameters of human capital, the trends in the human development index are …revealed. It was shown that human capital is a necessary independent factor determining economic growth. An attempt has been made to solve the problems of valuing human capital and equitable distribution of income in the context of the amortization of human capital. CONCLUSIONS: The main areas of human capital formation need to be reformed, in particular education and health, by enhancing investment. An analysis of the values of the human development index clearly shows that for the economic development of states it is necessary to pay more attention to such indicators for the level of education as well as for a decent standard of living for every citizen. Abstract: BACKGROUND: Pro-social rule breaking (PSRB) is considered a positive deviant workplace behavior. In the Chinese context, paternalistic leadership (PL), combined with benevolent, moral, and authoritarian behaviors, appears to affect subordinates’ internal psychology and external behaviors (e.g., PSRB). OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between PL and PSRB in the Chinese context. It was also hypothesized that psychological empowerment (PE) and leader-member exchange (LMX) moderates the relationship between PL and PSRB, respectively. METHODS: Data were collected from 366 working adults in China. The participants provided their experience and perception in the workplace …for the proposed research model. The reliability and validity of measurement scales were demonstrated. RESULTS: The results showed that the moral leadership dimension of PL negatively impacted PSRB, and the authoritarian leadership dimension of PL positively impacted PSRB. PE negatively moderated the relationship between moral leadership and PSRB and positively moderated the relationship between authoritarian leadership and PSRB. LMX positively moderated the relationship between authoritarian leadership and PSRB. CONCLUSIONS: The findings contribute to developing the theory of leadership style affecting PSRB. The implications for practice and future research directions were discussed. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Operating in foreign countries implies that organizations need to consider local cultures and adapt their human resource development (HRD) processes to local norms for an optimized performance. Such an adaptation requires the adoption of adequate cultural frameworks as Hofstede’s 6-D Model (Hofstede et al., 2010). A major limitation of Hofstede’s model is the missing consideration for regional and subcultural differences within the same country. Such a limitation may affect the success of HRD initiatives, as undertaken by global companies in a specific context. OBJECTIVE: This research intends to test Hofstede’s 6-D Model (Hofstede et al., 2010) at …the subcultural level using the case of a multinational company operating in the North and Northwest regions of Morocco, and to provide a critical analysis of this theory as to its applicability in the context of multinational organizations. METHODS: A quantitative survey-based study was considered for this research, using the Value Survey Module 2013 (VSM). The sample included the managers and professional workers of the Moroccan subsidiary of a multinational company from various cities in two regions. A descriptive approach was adopted to interpret the main features from the collected data. The collected scores were then treated using SPSS and XLSTAT to conduct the T-test statistical analysis, allowing also for a critical analysis of the subcultural value scores. RESULTS: The results of this study show differences between the cultural value dimensions in the subcultures of the North and Northwest of Morocco and the national culture. The comparison of the scores between North and Northwest regions of Morocco and Hofstede’s Moroccan national score following the T-test statistical analysis shows differences between at least four indices in both regions, leading to the conclusion that the regional cultural scores are statistically different from national scores. CONCLUSIONS: Given the importance of HRD in contributing to learning and change strategies and the importance of aligning leadership development approaches with the cultural values of multinational organizations, this study provides a further understanding of how subcultures represent important platforms for building contextualized HRD systems that foster managerial effectiveness and performance. Abstract: BACKGROUND: The development of the banking industry, especially the increasingly complex and diverse products and services, will increase the risk exposure of banks. OBJECTIVE: This research aimed to examine the effects of Tier-1 capital in terms of Risk Management and Profitability on the performance of Indonesian commercial banks. METHODS: The research population consisted of all commercial banks listed in the Indonesian Stock Exchange. The data are presented in the form of financial statements of commercial banks for the periods of 2012 to 2016 with a total of 42 banks. 28 of these met the criteria and …were included in the study. RESULTS: (a) Tier-1 capital has a direct positive effect on Risk Management, (b) Tier-1 capital has a positive indirect effect on Profitability with Risk Management as Mediation Variable, (c) Risk Management has a positive direct effect on Profitability, (d) Tier-1 Capital has a positive indirect effect on Performance with Risk Management and Profitability as Mediation Variables, (e) Risk Management has a positive indirect effect on Performance with a Mediation Variable, and (f) Profitability has a positive impact on Performance. CONCLUSIONS: The originality of this research can be deducted from the causal relationship between the effects of Tier-1 capital, risk management, and profitability on performance of commercial banks in the context of stock performance among Indonesian commercial banks. Also, the analysis tools that use the Multiple Fixed Effect Panel Data Model in this research are a novelty. In addition, previous research findings remain inconsistent and vary between one another. By conducting this research, it is expected that more consistent research findings can be generated. Show more
