Abstract: We investigated the magnetic behavior of an austenitic stainless steel with an inherent magnetic sensor under cyclic deformation, as well as the factors controlling its magnetic behavior. The permeability properties of type 304 stainless steel (SUS304) specimens subjected to different prestrains were measured along the longitudinal and width directions after an arbitrary number of cycles. It was found that the estimation parameter corresponding to the variation in the permeability increased and decreased periodically with an increase the number of cycles. Moreover, after comparing the values of the estimation parameter before and after stress-relief annealing, it was determined that the internal tensile stress of the martensite phase generated by the cyclic deformation caused the estimation parameter to decrease. This suggested that it should be possible to determine the magnitude of the inelastic strain in SUS304 on the basis of the inherent magnetic sensor.
