Price: EUR 125.00The Journal of Economic and Social Measurement (JESM) is a quarterly journal that is concerned with the investigation of all aspects of production, distribution and use of economic and other societal statistical data, and with the use of computers in that context. JESM publishes articles that consider the statistical methodology of economic and social science measurements. It is concerned with the methods and problems of data distribution, including the design and implementation of data base systems and, more generally, computer software and hardware for distributing and accessing statistical data files. Its focus on computer software also includes the valuation of algorithms and their implementation, assessing the degree to which particular algorithms may yield more or less accurate computed results. It addresses the technical and even legal problems of the collection and use of data, legislation and administrative actions affecting government produced or distributed data files, and similar topics.
The journal serves as a forum for the exchange of information and views between data producers and users. In addition, it considers the various uses to which statistical data may be put, particularly to the degree that these uses illustrate or affect the properties of the data. The data considered in JESM are usually economic or social, as mentioned, but this is not a requirement; the editorial policies of JESM do not place a priori restrictions upon the data that might be considered within individual articles. Furthermore, there are no limitations concerning the source of the data.

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to identify the individual contributions of the major factors explaining U.S. nominal GNP growth in an open-economy setting: technological change, increases in the endowments of labor and capital, movements in the terms of trade, …and domestic output price changes. We follow in turns a non parametric and a parametric approach. Both have a tight theoretical foundation, being based on the GNP function approach to modeling the production sector of an open economy. Abstract: An example of the application of a multiple comparison test to the estimation of residential demand for natural gas relationships using annual, state level data is set forth. The use of the multiple comparison procedure to specify fixed state effects …is discussed. Since multiple comparison tests are not used much in econometric analysis the chosen multiple comparison procedure is discussed within the context of alternative multiple comparison procedures. Comments on the possible application of these tests to other economic analyses are also discussed. Show more

Abstract: Knowledge of the cross-sectional distributional forms of financial accounting ratios can be important to users of accounting information. But previous studies of the cross-sectional distributional forms of accounting ratios have been limited to examining for normality. In this paper, the …cross-sectional distributions of forty-one common financial accounting ratios are classified according to the Pearson and Johnson systems for each year of a ten-year period. Ninety-seven percent of the distributions are J-shaped, reverse J-shaped, skewed, or U-shaped. The vast majority of the distributions are bounded. Also, thirty-five of the forty-one ratios have distributions with the same general form for at least eight years of the ten-year period. Show more

Abstract: Although personal income data for states are available on a timely basis, a comprehensive and timely measure of economic growth for cities does not exist. This paper develops a methodology for estimating current metropolitan area earnings by weighting the BLS …metropolitan-area monthly job data by the most recently available BEA industry earnings data. The earnings-weighted job data are then used to construct an economic performance index to compare economic growth among metropolitan areas. To illustrate, we construct the index for the 75 largest U.S. metropolitan areas for the first quarter of 1990. We also examine metropolitan economic growth for the year 1989 and show how our index compares to simple job growth and personal income growth. Finally, earnings-weighted shift-share analysis is developed as a way of further examining the components of growth in a city. Show more
