Abstract: In this paper the effect on energy consumption and pollution of fuzzy automatic control of a rotary kiln is investigated. The computer-based fuzzy control system is installed at the Larko ferronickel plant in Larymna, Greece, by the Danish firm F.L. Smidth & Co. A/S. Operation characteristics for the manual operation against automatic control are defined and compared. Preliminary results show substantial energy savings and reduced pollution levels. Payback period for the investment was calculated at approximately 1.2 years.

Abstract: Neural Networks are currently finding practical applications, ranging from 'soft' regulatory control in consumer products to accurate modelling of non-linear systems. This paper presents the development of improved neural networks based on short-term electric load forecasting models for the Power System of the Greek Island of Crete. Several approaches including radial basis function networks, dynamic neural networks and fuzzy-neural-type networks have been proposed and discussed in this paper. Their performances are evaluated through a simulation study, using metered data provided by the Greek Public Power Corporation. The results indicate that the load forecasting models developed provide more accurate forecasts compared …to the conventional backpropagation network forecasting models. Finally, the embedding of the new models capability in a modular-constructed forecasting system is presented. Show more

Abstract: This paper presents robust H^\infty controller design for fuzzy dynamic systems with state feedback. Three kinds of controller design methods are proposed based on a quadratic Lyapunov function or a piecewise smooth quadratic Lyapunov function. The control laws are numerically tractable by using LMI techniques and the global stability with disturbance attenuation of the closed-loop fuzzy control system is established. An example is given to illustrate the application of the proposed method.

Abstract: This paper addresses the robust H_2 control design of complex nonlinear systems which can be represented by a fuzzy dynamic model. Based on a continuous Lyapunov function and a piecewise continuous Lyapunov function respectively, two kinds of new control design methods are proposed using Lyapunov stability theory, robust H_2 control theory and Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI) techniques. It is shown that the closed loop fuzzy control system is asymptotically stable with a white noise attenuation. The robust H_2 fuzzy controller can be obtained by using the LMI techniques. An example is given to demonstrate …the application of the proposed design methods. Show more

Abstract: Today cache memory is integrated into the design of all state-of-the-art computer systems. Their performance evaluation is gaining a lot of attention, because it significantly affects the performance of the entire computer system. Fuzzy logic, which has proven to be a very powerful and efficient way of tackling problems in many engineering areas is used in this paper to provide a novel simulation methodology for the evaluation of cache memory performance. This methodology can be used during the preliminary stages of cache memory design, to overcome the disadvantages of conventional methods. Advantages of fuzzy logic are used to provide a …more simple, reliable and cost effective approach for cache memory performance evaluation, compared to conventional methods like trace driven simulation and hardware monitoring. Many complex approximations and time consuming testing of existing systems are thus avoided. The designer can study the effect of changing different design parameters of cache memory and investigate their effect on the miss ratio. Show more
