The purpose of the Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems: Applications in Engineering and Technology is to foster advancements of knowledge and help disseminate results concerning recent applications and case studies in the areas of fuzzy logic, intelligent systems, and web-based applications among working professionals and professionals in education and research, covering a broad cross-section of technical disciplines.

Abstract: The usual methods applied by enterprises to the selection of high executives involve a set of relevant criteria. These criteria frequently involve subjective and complex characteristics that must be adequately assessed to produce the proper decision about the most suitable profile among the available job applicants. A Fuzzy Multicriteria tool is suggested to help on the choice of the most promising applicant among the available candidates. Fuzzy sets are used to represent and manipulate the uncertain …criteria of the problem in a computer system. The Multicriteria technique explores the fuzzy criteria in order to produce a preference ranking order of the applicants for the employment. As an important complement to this proposal, a CBR (Case-Based Reasoning) mechanism is presented as an additional tool for decision aid and as a mechanism of incremental learning. Abstract: In this work a heuristic approach for nesting irregular shapes is considered. The approach is based on extracting some of the human intuitive thoughts, and has the feature of minimizing raw material waste. We have tested the proposed algorithm assuming requirements that resemble various industrial stock cut needs. Our results were compared with those obtained from experienced operators and other heuristic approaches. Abstract: A proper assessment of traffic accident site and prompt clearance actions with response emergency vehicles are crucial to reduce related congestion on freeways. Training novice officers in accident site management will reduce inappropriate assessment that delays rapid clearance response. The INtelligent TRaffic Evaluator for Prompt Incident Diagnosis using a Reality Engine (INTREPID-RE) simulates traffic accidents using the virtual reality technique. The system allows users to evaluate accidents as if they were present …at a real accident site. The simulated traffic accidents generated by INTREPID-RE are based on a combination of vehicle types, highway conditions, visibility, and final position of the involved vehicles. In this first of a two-part paper, the research results in major features, such as the creation of an interactive user interface panel, seven highway configurations, five types of traffic vehicles, overturning condition of the vehicles, traffic cones, nighttime visibility, foggy weather conditions, animation of moving vehicles, and dynamic text display. Abstract: This Part II of a two-part paper presents the development of a prototype of the INtelligent TRaffic Evaluator for Prompt Incident Diagnosis using a Reality Engine (INTREPID-RE), a system that simulates a traffic accident site using virtual reality. While Part~I emphasizes the construction of the user interface control panel and the 3D objects, this paper describes the development of the virtual reality algorithm, environment and models. During the simulation process, novice highway patrol officers wear a …head-mounted display and a cyberglove to enter and view an accident scene that they create, and assess the magnitude and severity of the traffic accident. Based on their assessments, patrol officers establish an on-site traffic control strategy and coordinate parking of emergency vehicles that minimizes unnecessary traffic congestion. Officers use INTREPID-RE to secure a safe area for on-site patrol officers, create a channel to permit other drivers to pass the site, and dispatch highway patrol and emergency vehicles to the accident site. The interactive positioning function allows a virtual hand to simulate the positioning of emergency vehicles and clearing of accident vehicles on the road. Six domain experts who evaluated INTREPID-RE rated the system as good and agree that it has the potential to become a promising tool for training novice police officers. Show more

Abstract: Robotic gear deburring is a relatively difficult task because traditional position/force control laws are not suitable due to the complicated geometry and inevitable system positioning error. A position/force control algorithm based on force measurement is investigated for unknown gear profile detection and tracking, and its further application to the deburring process.
