Abstract: BACKGROUND: Road accidents are one of the most important issues in Iran which more than eighteen thousand persons are died annually because of this problem. Among the major reasons for this issue, sleepiness and cardiovascular disorder can be mentioned. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between insomnia and cardiovascular risk factors among professional drivers who are at high risk during driving. METHODS: A total of 1232 male bus drivers were included in the study and two different kinds of data sets were collected: (1) Sleep disorder information using Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS) and (2) Cardiovascular parameters …such as systematic measurement of blood pressure, electrocardiography (ECG), total cholesterol, and triglyceride. RESULTS: Our study demonstrated that the prevalence of insomnia in professional bus drivers was 8 percent. The study showed significant association between age, diastolic hypertension and work experience with final awakening earlier than desired (P < 0.05), the rate of the triglyceride level and total sleep duration (p = 0.02), and BMI and sleepiness during the day (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggested that elevated serum triglyceride levels and increased diastolic blood pressure may be associated with some sleep complaints in drivers. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: In the correctional context, occupational characteristics may contribute to the development of burnout. OBJECTIVE: To compare the scores of Emotional Exhaustion (EE), Cynicism (CY) and Professional Efficacy (PE) of staff members according to occupational variables in two correctional facilities (CF1 and CF2). METHODS: 339 Brazilian employees from two correctional facilities completed a socio-demographic/occupational questionnaire and the Maslach Burnout Inventory–General Survey (MBI-GS). The comparison between the scores obtained on each MBI-GS factor, according to variables of interest vs. correctional facilities, was performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA-two way: p < 0.05). RESULTS: Statistically significant …differences were observed between the levels of EE, CY and PE between the correctional facilities (p < 0.001); staff from CF2 presented worse levels. Women (p = 0.014) and individuals with a 10-year tenure or higher (p = 0.041) presented higher levels of EE. Lower scores of professional efficacy were found in CF2 staff members with a 10-year tenure or higher (p = 0.018). The prison escort and surveillance agents presented mean values of EE (p = 0.030) and CY (p = 0.008) that were significantly lower than those of the correctional security officers. CONCLUSIONS: The scores of EE, CY and PE of the staff members suffered a significant influence from the correctional facility, gender, professional category and tenure. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Disturbed sleep is common in shift work. It is hypothesized that administration of exogenous melatonin could reduce the sleep latency and improve the sleep quality. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of 3 mg melatonin taken 30 min before night time sleep on shift workers with difficulty falling asleep. METHODS: Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) were applied to find out shift workers with difficulty falling asleep. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study with periods of 3 night and washouts of 2 weeks comparing melatonin with placebo was performed. Night time sleep parameters …obtained from somnowatch including total sleep time (TST), sleep onset latency (SOL), sleep efficiency (SE) and wakening after sleep onset (WASO) were analyzed. RESULTS: Among 295 workers, 103 had difficulty falling asleep. Finally, from 50 randomly selected workers with difficulty falling asleep, 39 workers completed the study. Melatonin treatment significantly increased SE and decreased SOL in comparison with baseline and taking placebo. SE was increased from 82.1% at baseline to 85.5% after melatonin therapy. Also SOL was decreased from 0.27 h at baseline to 0.20 h after melatonin therapy. Effects of Melatonin administration on TST and WASO were not significant. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that melatonin therapy in shift workers with difficulty falling asleep significantly improved the sleep onset latency and sleep efficiency. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Certain behavior types can drive the emergence of an unsafe act at the workplace which may be reflected by workers’ perceptions toward safety climate. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between workers’ safety climate perceptions (NOSACQ-50 questionnaire) and their behavior types (based on DISC personality traits: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness). METHODS: NOSACQ-50 and DISC assessment questionnaires were distributed on employees of four different companies (N = 755) working at hazardous workplaces in different occupational fields: fertilizer, coal mining, and oil & gas. RESULTS: Four of the 48 …correlation coefficients were statistically significant in which the strongest correlation was found between safety commitment and Influence (I) trait in public self (r = –0.119, p < 0.01). There were two groups of DISC’s profile that have a lower perception toward safety climate. The first group was indicated by high scores on Influence (I) trait in public self (17.2% of respondents), and the latter was characterized by low scores on Dominance (D) trait and high scores on Conscientiousness (C) trait in private self (2.8% of respondents). CONCLUSIONS: Lower perception toward safety climate was found to be correlated with two groups of DISC’s profile. Workers characterized with these two profiles are considered to have priority needs for training or to be assigned to less a hazardous workplace. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Overuse of the extensor carpi radialis (ECR) may play a role in the development of lateral epicondylitis (LE). However, no studies have investigated the muscle activity ratio between the ECR and extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) associated with the kinematics during wrist extension in workers with LE. OBJECTIVE: We compared the ratio (ECR/ECU) of muscle activity between the ECR and ECU and the kinematics of the wrist during wrist extension between workers with and without LE. METHODS: Fifteen automobile assembly line workers with LE and 15 workers without LE participated in this study. The ratio …of muscle activity was measured using surface electromyography, and wrist kinematics were measured by a three-dimensional motion analysis system while the workers extended their wrists actively to the maximum range to which they did not feel uncomfortable. RESULTS: Significantly greater ratios of muscle activity, ranges of radial deviation, and combined motion of radial deviation and extension (CMDE) were shown in workers with LE compared to those without LE. Also, the range of wrist extension was significantly lower in workers with LE than in those without LE. CONCLUSIONS: Quantifying the ratio of muscle activity with altered kinematics of wrist extension may help researchers to understand why overuse of ECR is occurring and explain LE development in automobile assembly line workers.
