Abstract: Supported employment has emerged as a viable alternative to conventional rehabilitation approaches for tens of thousands of individuals previously excluded from employment opportunities. However, the ability to retain a job in business or industry for an extended period of time remains a challenge for many supported employment participants. An exploratory investigation of the reasons for job separation of 1,484 individuals participating in supported employment programs in eight states was completed to investigate behavioral characteristics that facilitate or hinder employment retention. Results illustrate that employment retention is affected by a wide variety of vocational, behavioral, economic, and external factors. Abstract: The vocational assessment of brain-damaged clients can be approached through the disciplines of vocational evaluation or neuropsychology. Each avenue has its strength and pitfalls. Vocational evaluation focuses on specific cognitive, educational, and physical attributes that are required to negotiate positions within the competitive labor market. Neuropsychological evaluation dovetails with this criteria to amplify other less structured but important aspects of the client's vocational profile, particularly those variables that relate to “executive” functions, novel learning, and neurobehavioral syndromes. Coordination of both spheres is essential if brain-damaged clients' vocational placement is to be enhanced. Abstract: The authors discuss the principles of transfer and generalization of learning as they apply to rehabilitation after traumatic brain injury. A general model is provided that predicts the outcome of most rehabilitation therapies. Implications of the model for improving treatment are discussed. Two experimental tests of the model are described and the results are in accord with model predictions.

Abstract: Return to work following spinal cord injury is achievable for many individuals. Interdisciplinary rehabilitation teams are ideally suited to facilitate an individual's efforts at overcoming the numerous barriers involved in returning to gainful, competitive employment. Many of these barriers are person-specific (i.e., education level), and multifaceted assessment and comprehensive vocational planning are suggested. Other barriers, such as economic disincentives and poor access to needed services, are less easily overcome. Rehabilitation professionals are encouraged to become familiar with recent health and disability policy (i.e., Americans with Disabilities Act) and become proactive in policy formation. Abstract: Return to work has become an increasingly important consideration in TBI rehabilitation. However, most of the efforts in return to work centers around client deficits and treatment with little attention paid to the larger context of the world of work. This article examines the agendas of other players in the world of work and the interplay of these agendas that influence successful outcomes in return to work.
