Abstract: The gulf between research and practice in health and social services is uncomfortably wide. Valuable efforts and energies of professional researchers are squandered as the implications fail to empower and encourage practitioners and become more adept at undertaking their own service-based research projects. A model is presented to aid their planning and in aligning the methodologies to suit the resources at their disposal. A guiding maxim is that in services at present, any research is better than none.

Abstract: Database technology is becoming an essential aspect of planning the provision of a quality service. This paper describes the stages involved in establishing a client database in one large mental handicap agency. The critical features for successful operation of a database are outlined and suggestions made for further applications of data managements systems. The impact of an effective information system on the capacity of clinicians to monitor quality of service is discussed. The relevance of this approach to managing information is emphasised in relation to speech and language therapists, psychologists and other Health Care professionals.

Abstract: Many studies have been undertaken, over a number of years, to establish if a relationship exists between auditory discrimination and phonological disability. Results of such studies are conflicting, reasons for this lack of consensus are proposed. A study is described where the discrimination errors of a group of subjects with phonological disability are compared to the errors of matched subjects with normal articulation. No difference in the number or type of errors was found.

Abstract: This study attempts to gain a greater understanding of how adults with autism see themselves and their social world, using two procedures derived from (Kelly’s 1965) Personal Construct Theory (PCT) with six adults with autism. Six subjects with mental handicap were also included in the study in an attempt to differentiate between results attributable to mental handicap and those attributable to autism. The results suggest that adults with autism view themselves in a restricted manner and their view of others is also limited thus mitigating against successful social interaction. This may be interpreted to indicate that therapy, focussing on developing …the adult’s ability to construe self and others in order to facilitate the formulation of predictions in social contexts, may increase self esteem and result in more socially appropriate behaviour. Abstract: It is reported in the literature that children with a history of febrile convulsions (f.c.) are more likely to develop speech and/or language problems, than their non-convulsing peers. (Robinson, 1987; Schiottz-Christensen and Bruhn, 1973, Verity et al 1985 and Wallace 1988). Although these studies cite incidence figures, they fail to specify the exact nature of the speech and/or language problem presenting. This paper reports a study comparing aspects of receptive and expressive language (including phonology) and auditory skills of children with a history of f.c. with matched controls. Findings suggest that slthough f.c. children are in more need of speech …& language therapy, they develop language and auditory perceptual skills in a similar pattern to non-convulsing children, but there are indications that some differences exist between the groups in phonological development. Abstract: Research into the interaction patterns of nonspeaking individuals suggests that they are disadvantaged in communication interactions, in terms of conversation control and success. This case study examines the interaction patterns of a nonspeaking girl, Eileen, and explores some of the assessment issues which must be addressed in dealing with such a client. These issues are considered from the point of view of the sender and receiver in the communication interaction, the medium or mode of communication and the communication context. The strategies of ‘important listeners’ in maintaining ‘communication equilibrium’ are examined in the context of skill deficits on the part …of the nonspeaking partner. Abstract: This is a case presentation of a six year old girl presenting with Moebius Syndrome. She was first seen by a Speech Therapist as a routine screening session in a Preschool, when she was three years old. Following this she underwent numerous investigations and her diagnosis of Moebius Syndrome was confirmed, in December 1990 (C.Age 5.11 years.). Because of the nature of the syndrome, her communication difficulties are complex and the Speech and Language Therapist has a very important role to play in management.
