Abstract: In Czechoslovakia, high attention is paid to the exploitation of new and renewable sources of energy. In connection with their rising significance, possibilities for their statistical description were examined. The objective was to include new and renewable sources in the statistical energy balances, which are compiled annually. Problems connected with the introduction of statistics on production and use of these energy sources derive from the wide dispersion of these sources over the country and their small output per unit. Indicators used for determining output are adapted to the various forms of new and renewable energy, such as solar or geothermal energy, energy from heat pumps, biogas and wind energy. They permit to assess the importance of these sources for the country's energy economy. Waste heat and fuel recovered from various energy-intensive branches of industry are significant in Czechoslovakia. Accordingly, methods have also been developed for their statistical coverage and inclusion in the energy balances.
