Abstract: The evaluation of water requirements for industry is of great importance in rational water resources planning aimed at the efficient utilization of available sources and at guaranteeing supplies for future industrial installations. In order to build up a sufficiently complete picture of the Italian situation regarding water supplies for industrial purposes, a number of nation-wide and regional surveys were carried out in various stages by sampling from a meaningful number of production units selected from the water-using industrial sectors. The main features of water utilization in industry were examined and a survey methodology suitable for use in later studies was developed. Specific water utilization parameters such as unit water requirements, recycling and consumption were estimated. These parameters are of considerable relevance to the correct determination of how to make the best use of water resources.
