Abstract: The increasingly problematic role of the process of transition from school to work has added to the need for producing more information on transition patterns and the effect of various support measures on these, Also, the development of register-based population statistics which has taken place in recent years has opened new opportunities for describing the transition process in statistical terms. Some years ago Statistics Finland has developed a statistical system which produces data for persons gaining a qualification in a given year and their labour market situation for example one year or five years later. The Finnish register-based population statistics system offers very extensive opportunities to study the flows to and from the labour market Statistics Finland has also developed an indicator which can be used to asses unemployment among persons with different qualifications and the variation in unemployment from year to year.
