Abstract: A major dilemma that National Statistical Institutes are confronted with, is how to deal with the constantly increasing demand for statistics while simultaneously making use of the non-growing corresponding resources. The paper is particularly trying to approach one of the crucial issues to be considered, namely how to anticipate future demands and prioritise the statistical activities within the annual national statistical programme, so that the negative impact of the new unexpected demands on the normal content and pace of activities is minimised.
