Abstract: A series of La(III), Ce(III), Pr(III), Nd(III), Sm(III), Eu(III), Gd(III) and Dy(III) complexes have been synthesized with Schiff bases derived from 4-aminomethylcarbostyril and substituted salicylaldehyde. The characterized involved elemental analyses, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility, electronic, IR, NMR, mass and thermal studies. Spectral studies show all the Schiff bases behave as bidentate ligands and coordinate through the azomethine nitrogen and phenolic oxygen. The ligands and their metal complexes have been screened for their biological studies. The results indicate that the biological activity increases on complexation. The Lanthanium(III) complexes of the above ligands show greater inhibitory action towards the P388/s tumor cells at lower concentrations.
