Abstract: A new two-dimensional (2D) bismuth(III) coordination polymer, {[Bi(μ-C4H4O6)(NO3)(H2O)]. 4H2O}∞ (1), resulted from the hydrothermal reaction of tartaric acid and Bi(NO3)3.5H2O. The compound was characterized by elemental analysis and IR spectroscopy, and by X-ray structure analysis. Compound 1 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space groupP212121. Tartrate as a multidentate ligand bridges four symmetry related bismuth(III) ions in an O,O’ fashion to form an infinite 2D coordination network in the (0 0 1) plane. Thermal decomposition of 1 in the presence of polyethylene glycol led to nano-particles of Bi2O3. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the structure and morphology of the Bi2O3 powders. The XRD pattern confirmed the formation of the α-polymorph of Bi2O3.
