Abstract: In [(2-amino-5-methylpyridinium) (PbBr3)]n the asymmetric unit comprises a cation (C6H9N2+) and half unit of the dimer anion hexabromodiplumbate (Pb2Br62−). The plumbate dianion forms a polymer, and together with the cation repeat symmetrically to form the extended [(2-amino-5-methylpyridinium) (PbBr3)]n structure. The polymeric anion [PbBr3]nn− possesses slightly distorted PbBr6 octahedral coordination and forms an infinite chain running along the a axis consisting of ... μ-Br2—Pb—μ-Br2—Pb—μ-Br2 ... that are interconnected with the next chain along the c axis via triply bridging Br1 atoms. In the crystal lattice, two intermolecular Br ... H—N—H ... Br and one (py)N—H ... Br hydrogen bonds tie the polymeric anionic chains to the cations, consolidating a three dimensional network.
