Abstract: The relationships between primary and secondary publishers are examined from the point of view of the secondary publishing world. The functions of secondary publication are reviewed in order to clearly differentiate the respective roles of the two activities in the information distribution chain. Copyright status in the perspective of the property rights involved is noted with an overview of current legislation and cases. The paper concludes with an emphasis on the symbiotic nature of primary/secondary relationships.
