Abstract: Up to the 1960s information and documentation were little developed in the automobile industry compared to the chemical or electrical engineering industry. Since that time the development of information and documentation has been rapidly promoted. Some special information services which are characteristic for special information needs in the automobile industry are described: an information service for vehicle tests, an information service for automotive engineering drawings, and a database for technical data of various vehicle types. In large companies it seems unlikely that the information and documentation department will be given the responsibility for the entire information management of a company. But its significance for the information supply of the company will increase, its most important function being its contribution to improving the qualifications of the company's employees.
