Abstract: The use of networks and networking technology is addressed in the context of its potential for applications in the information industry. Current capabilities are outlined for voice, video and data components and the introduction of fiber optics and digital switching are noted for future enhancement. Applications for local area networks in desktop environments and other factors are considered in order to provide an ‘intelligent’ network. Two phases planned for this network and their characteristics are given.
