A managerially based framework for the role and contribution of an information service in a production organisation*

Abstract: It is argued that, like other service functions, the information service should contribute towards the achievement of the production organisation's main objective. The role of information in a production organisation, as well as the nature of the contribution made by the information service towards the achievement of the main objective, are discussed. This is followed by a report of a survey conducted among production engineers in order to determine the role and contribution of the steel manufacturing company's information service.
