Abstract: The emphasis of the value-added model is on the user and on his perception of utility and value. This study analyzed thirteen abstracting and indexing operations in order to ascertain those steps in specific processes that added value, i.e. were of benefit to a user in making choices from the information displayed. Of twenty-three values isolated and defined, A&I services appear to add twenty of them in varying degrees. For information services generally, the user-driven/value-added model can provide a significant way of organizing, evaluating and interpreting data for estimation and planning.
