Abstract: The role of schools of library and information science in on-line education is to give the student the philosophical and conceptual base upon which searching skills, both on-line and in hard copy, are developed, and to instill in the student a desire for continued learning. Hands-on searching is begun in the academic component of the student's preparation and is furthered by employer and vendor through continued education in specific subject areas and data bases. Cooperation among the three—educator, employer, vendor—is important to the development of superior searchers. Research not only in data-base design, but also in assessment of teaching/learning modes of on-line education, is needed.
Keywords: On-line training, schools of library and information science, reference skills, teaching modes, cooperation with vendors
