Abstract: Originally launched for the home user, Photo CD has the potential to achieve standard status as a storage medium. Manufacturers Kodak have recently recognised this potential and have re-launched the product as a professional system. Continuing product development is aimed at increasing accessibility and fulfilling capture, storage and retrieval requirements to the point where the system can be considered a standard. Functionality within the system is explored, together with future-proofing implications and application hints for practitioners. Two case studies illustrate typical applications of Photo CD in academic and commercial image archiving contexts.
