Editorial: Kind Thanks to All Our Authors, Friends and Readers
It is with great sincerity that the undersigned offers her warmest thanks to all who have been authors, readers, advisors and staff of Environmental Policy and Law during the past 16 years. While the task of serving as EPL’s Managing Editor has not always been an easy one, the efforts and struggles involved have been balanced by the pleasure of realising that the journal has continued to fulfil its initial commitments throughout these years, even after the 2017 loss of our founder, Dr Wolfgang Burhenne, and throughout the difficulties of the past year, both the challenges of the pandemic and the reorganisation of many aspects of our journal and its production.
As EPL begins to transition towards a new approach, it is clearly time for me to move on to other activities in the fields of international policy-making and national law-making around the world. I am happy to note that my friend and colleague, Bharat H. Desai, Professor of International Law, who holds the Jawaharlal Nehru Chair at the Centre for International Legal Studies, School of International Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, will succeed me as Managing Editor of EPL. I feel confident that Dr Burhenne would heartily approve of this appointment.
I wish particularly to thank all of the readers and advisors who have written to me with praise, suggestions and the occasional criticism. EPL has always been a collaborative effort undertaken by and for those of us who have worked in the small world of environmental policy and environmental law around the world. Your contributions and comments have kept our journal relevant and useful while others have perished or changed. I encourage you to stay in contact with Bharat, his staff and the excellent people at IOS Press who have worked hard to provide useful and timely information to professionals in our field, and will continue to do so.
Although it would be both difficult and sad for me to compile the names of all who have worked on the editing and writing staff of EPL during the past 16 years, I must particularly commend the current staff members by name: Tiina Rajamets, Elsa Tsioumani, Efstathia (“Statha”) Laina, Anastasia Galilaiou and Asterios Tsioumanis. I hope this editorial will serve as my strongest recommendation on behalf of each of these individuals, and will happily echo it in a more personal communication if asked. Finally, I cannot express my gratitude strongly enough for the fact that, throughout my years in this position, I have benefited enormously from the support, patience and positive attitude of Marleen Berfelo, EPL’s liaison with IOS Press, and of the company’s Founder and Director, Dr Einar Fredriksson.
