Abstract: Funding was received from the Victoria Law Foundation for development of a Computer-Aided Instruction (CAI) package for use in a Law Library reader education program. The implementation of effective CAI techniques, identification of the learning principles applicable to the design of the program and the feasibility of converting the practical aspects of the learning processes involved in the teaching of legal research into a CAI program are discussed. It was decided to use the Australian Digest in the program, this being one of the most difficult sources for students to master. Legislation was treated in a slightly different manner, using both free text retrieval software (AIRS) and CAI software (LES). A literature review of key papers in CAI and a description of important types of frames in a CAI program are included. [French and German translations of this abstract can be found on pp. 195–196]
