Abstract: A discussion of the pattern of library and information science (LIS) education in South Africa, with a consideration of the effects of the political changes implemented by the Government of National Unity which follow from the first democratic national election of 1994. The need for the instilling of competencies of information literacy, the need for redress in resource management and the possible unification of the ‘formal’ and ‘informal’ aspects of the South African LIS sector are considered within the context of the development of improved LIS curricula.
