Abstract: The aim of the TEMPUS program was to contribute to the development and modernization of the higher education of Central-Eastern European countries. The main points of the program are the so-called Joint European Projects (JEP). They may be established on condition of the participation and cooperation of at least two universities or highschools of countries belonging to the European Community and at least one institution of a Central-Eastern European country. The Chair for Library and Information Studies at the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest had a TEMPUS connection between 1990–1993 with the Department of Library, Documentation and Information Science at the highschools of Hannover (Germany) and of Deventer (the Netherlands). The project and our cooperation based on it had three main aims: 1) elaboration of an up-to-date European curriculum for the department of Budapest; 2) the creation of the technical conditions necessary for the realization of the new curricula in Budapest; 3) the organization and securing of the mobility of tutors and students. Summing up our common results with our German and Dutch partners in the above mentioned three fields, it may be stated that our cooperation was very fruitful. The generous assistance of the TEMPUS-center of Brussels (through three years altogether 452,00 ECU), without the obligation of paying it back, was the greatest investment in the history of the instruction of Hungarian librarians, documentalists and information specialists.
