Abstract: It has been widely recognized that the role of the formal sciences in the realm of linguistics in the past four decades has been so great as to practically have made linguistics itself into a formal science. The influences that linguistics has had upon AI, on the other hand, have not been as apparent. In this talk, we shall examine some areas in which linguistics in particular and the study of language in general have provided useful insight into specific AI areas besides the computational linguistics one. After discussing some of the incidences of studies of language upon these areas, in a hopefully objective manner, we will subjectively argue that these links should be further and more deliberately explored, since they have chances of leading the way towards a fruitful integration between the formal and the humanistic sciences.
