Abstract: The analysis of transferable skills is a common procedure in the vocational assessment of individuals with disabilities who have work experience. Although the application of transferable skills analysis has gained broad acceptance within the rehabilitation profession, there is little research concerning its validity and utility. This article a) reviews the concepts which form the basis of transferable skills analysis and b) highlights the need for future research on this widely used approach to vocational assessment.

Abstract: This article reviews and discusses current placement trends in public rehabilitation. In order to identify current trends a survey of state vocational rehabilitation agency administrators was conducted. Responses were received from 52 agencies representing 40 states. The results of the survey, along with current literature, resulted in identification of four key trends in placement services: increased emphasis on placement; reconfiguring placement delivery services; expanded employer development; and increased use of the Internet …and other technology. The implications of these trends to rehabilitation counseling are also discussed. Show more

Abstract: The intent of this article is to explore the possibility of an opportunity structure for rehabilitation counselors that extends far beyond that which has previously been considered. The current trends that are enlarging the rehabilitation arena. Beyond this, however, career counseling principles are applied to the rehabilitation counseling profession itself. The authors ask, ``To what related and unrelated occupations might one transfer the skills of a trained rehabilitation counselor?'' Abstract: With the introduction of legislation that protects the employment rights of people with disabilities but also requires them to assume responsibility for communicating their needs to employers, it is critical that rehabilitation consumers develop the skills to self-advocate and to collaborate with employers to implement reasonable accommodations. The purpose of this article is to review assessment and planning strategies that (a) increase the consumer's awareness of the protections afforded by legislative mandates such …as Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), (b) identify worksite accommodation needs, (c) promote collaborative communication with employers to implement and evaluate reasonable accommodations, and (d) teach the consumer how to negotiate with employers and resolve conflicts that may arise in the accommodation planning process. Abstract: The article describes the employment experiences and concerns of people with multiple sclerosis (MS), one of the most common neurological disorders in the Western Hemisphere. The authors examine the factors that present barriers to successful employment for people with MS and offer recommendations to assist people with MS in overcoming those barriers.

Abstract: This article provides an overview of the processes by which rehabilitation researchers select statistical analyses. The authors begin with a discussion of the different types of variables that researchers measure and manipulate. This discussion is followed by a description on how variables are articulated into research questions and hypotheses. The article concludes with summaries of the most commonly applied inferential statistics that are used in rehabilitation and other health-related professions.
