Abstract: In this paper, the influence of arbitrary poling direction on two unequal semi-permeable cracks in a piezoelectric media is studied. Stroh’s formalism and complex variable techniques are used to formulate the problem. Closed form analytic expressions are derived for crack opening displacement (COD), crack opening potential drop (COP), intensity factors (IFs) and energy release rates (ERRs). A numerical case study is presented for a poled PZT-5H ceramic plate to investigate the effect of mechanical and electric-displacement loads on IFs and ERRs. Moreover, the effect of arbitrary poling direction on IFs and ERRs is presented graphically. It is observed that IFs and ERRs are maximum when poling direction is perpendicular to the cracks faces.
