Abstract: The objective of the Bulgarian environment monitoring system is to provide up-to-date and sound information for the assessment of the environment, the prediction of events and the improvement of nature protection and natural resources management. The established computerized data base offers possibilities for performing statistical analyses and developing mathematical models for decision-making. The principal components analysis applied to meteorological and pollution data allows the extraction of a minimum set of indices characterizing the total variation to a sufficient extent. Using time-series analysis, the trend and periodical fluctuations of ambient air pollution in urban areas with sulphur dioxide is established.
