Abstract: Food shortage in sub-Saharan Africa can partly be attributed to social behaviour. It is possible to analyse the situation starting from the notion of “endowment”. It permits an assessment of the situation with a view to highlighting the long-term effects of human intervention, if appropriate tools for such an assessment can be developed. One possible approach towards this end is in the development of a suitable accounting framework. Formalized accounting for agricultural activities, for purposes of general environmental information, for the development of aggregate indicators on the evolution over time of natural patrimony elements, and for the work to be done by resource managers.
