Abstract: Crystal structure determinations of the complexes (C5H4Br2N)2[CdCl4].H2O and {[C5H4Br2N][Cd(OH2)Cl-μ-Cl2]}n, (henceforth 1 and 2, respectively), have been determined. In the monomeric anion of 1, the geometry around Cd is distorted tetrahedral whereas in the polymeric anion 2, the coordination around Cd is distorted octahedral with a zig-zag chain of edge-sharing octahedra along b, that are connected via short intra H–O–H· · ·Cl–Cd hydrogen bonds. There are many intermolecular interactions between the cations and anions (some are extremely short) of the types O–H···Cl, C–Br···Cl–Cd, N–H···Cl and aryl···aryl (π···π), leading to a three-dimensional network.
