Abstract: Positron emission tomography (PET), as a functional neuroimaging
technique, provides biochemical and molecular information about brain and tumor
tissues. We present the findings of FDG (2-deoxy-2[18F]-fluoro-D-glucose)-PET
and magnetic resonance imaging in a 7-year-girl with tuberous sclerosis.
Cranial magnetic resonance imaging revealed multiple cortical tubers,
subependymal nodules and a subependymal giant cell astrocytoma. On FDG-PET
images, the regions of cortical tubers were hypometabolic and the tumor also
demonstrated hypometabolism implying a low-grade tumor. PET has been studied in
tuberous sclerosis for many purposes including epilepsy and mental retardation.
The present report suggests that FDG-PET could be useful in patients with
tuberous sclerosis and intraventricular tumor as well.
