Abstract: The sensitivity of conventional microbiological techniques for the
diagnosis of neonatal bacterial meningitis is often inadequate. We review our
data, discuss recent technological advances and argue that polymerase chain
reaction targeted against microorganisms commonly involved in this condition
could offer important advantages in the diagnosis and management of this
condition.
