Abstract: The basic concepts of inelastic neutron scattering are introduced leading to the formulation of the differential scattering cross sections for inelastic scattering. Inelastic scattering provides several unique ways of viewing materials. It permits measurements of the forces acting on atoms in solids, leading, for example, to the characterisation of the strength and the symmetry of the binding site of hydrogen atoms in metals. It often permits a detailed examination of the environment of magnetic ions in materials through the magnetic inelastic cross section. Finally, lattice vibrations may change their frequencies dramatically when driven by changes in electronic structure which precede phase transitions and hence provide a powerful tool for understanding these transitions.
