Abstract: The method of ray-tracing simulation of the resolution functions for neutron scattering experiments is described. The corresponding algorithm has been implemented in a resolution calculation program for conventional three-axis spectrometers and combined with an efficient Monte Carlo convolution algorithm to simulate the phonon scans. Used in data fitting procedures, this method permits adequate instrumental corrections to be made including second order effects, and thus to improve significantly the accuracy of experiments. The measurement of LO phonons in diamond is given as an example.
